Kalyāṇa-Mitta (Spiritual Friends)
The Buddha emphasized the importance of noble friends in the Half the Holy Life sutta….
“This is the entire holy life, Ānanda, that is, good friendship, good companionship, good comradeship. When a bhikkhu has a good friend, a good companion, a good comrade, it is to be expected that he will develop and cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path.”
A Kalyana Mitta or (KM) group, is a small, peer-led community of practitioners who gather to support one another in the study and practice of Buddhism and mindfulness. Translated from Pali as "spiritual friendship," a KM group provides a safe, intimate space to integrate dharma teachings into the complexities of daily life through deep listening and shared reflection. Unlike a traditional teacher-led class, these groups emphasize mutual horizontal support.
Meetings typically include
A period of silent or guided meditation practice to settle the mind.
Discussion of a specific book, sutta, or practice theme and contemplation on how these teachings might be incorporated into your daily life.
A commitment to "wise speech," ensuring every member is heard in confidentiality without judgment or unsolicited advice.
