Kalyāṇa-Mitta Groups (KM)

There is much emphasis on “spiritual friendships” within Buddhist community life.  Since early Buddhist history, cultivation of “good friends” has been encouraged to support the dharma practice.  There is no teaching that takes place in these groups.  They begin with a meditation period and time for sharing how one’s meditation practice is showing up both on the cushion and in every day life.  KM groups enrich the practice in ways sitting alone or only on Tuesday evenings in Sangha can’t.  Sometimes there is a book that is used as a stimulating discussion about  how the reading/topic applies to our lives.  It is an opportunity to create connections and practice speaking in truth and listening in kindness.

Participation in a KM group means one is prepared to commit to regular attendance at the bi-monthly meetings, to develop or perhaps deepen an already existing sitting practice, to be open to discuss readings on a Dharma topic and to practice exercises designed to deepen mindfulness in one’s daily life.
